13/02/2009 - Manila - ADB Water Project to Ease the Strain on Women in Lao PDR
Women who spend up to two hours a day on the backbreaking task of water collection and storage will be key beneficiaries of a new water supply and sanitation project in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic.
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) Board of Directors approved a $23 million grant from its Asian Development Fund for the Small Towns Water Supply and Sanitation Sector Project.

13/02/2009 - New York - UNODC Report on Human Trafficking Exposes Modern Form of Slavery
A Global Report on Trafficking in Persons launched today by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) provides new information on a crime that shames us all.
Based on data gathered from 155 countries, it offers the first global assessment of the scope of human trafficking and what is being done to fight it. It includes: an overview of trafficking patterns; legal steps taken in response; and country-specific information on reported cases of trafficking in persons, victims, and prosecutions.

05/02/2009 - Vientiane - UNDP: H.E. Mr. Phongsavath Boupha, Vice Minister Ministry of Foreign Affairs, together with Ms. Sonam Yangchen Rana, UN Resident Coordinator / UNDP Resident Representative, signed a Project Document for the International Law Project Phase III. The International Law Project is an initiative that started in 2002 in partnership between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and UNDP. Its main objective is the enhancement of the active participation and engagement of the Lao PDR in the international legal process, and to be responsive to the needs of the Lao PDR in international law.

07/01/2009 - Vientiane - FAO: USD 40,000 Worth Of Equipment Donated To MAF For Continued Avian Influenza Work
Over $US40,000 worth of information technology and motorbikes were officially donated today to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) from Japan and Germany, by projects managed by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Despite more than 10 years of robust economic growth in Lao PDR, the situation remains unchanged for the 40 percent of children under five years that continue to be affected by chronic malnutrition, denying them the right to reach their full mental and physical potential. Many also suffer from high levels of micronutrient deficiencies.

30/12/2008 - Vientiane - FAO: Student Has Taste For Good Nutrition
Mr Lee Yay Sayaxang, a 27 year old student in his final year at the Faculty of Agriculture at the National University of Laos, beat over 260 other entrants to win the FAO Nutrition Quiz, receiving a 150,000 kip prize.

As part of the commemorations of UN Day, and in order to promote understanding of the United Nations System and its relationship with the Lao PDR among young people, the Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the United Nations Office of the Resident Coordinator today held a United Nations Security Council Simulation on the subject of cluster munitions.
