“Shared Water – Shared Opportunities” with a special focus on transboundary waters
With its theme of “Shared Waters, Shared opportunities”, World Water Day 2009 has special relevance for the millions of people who live along the banks of the Mekong River - one of the largest transboundary river basins in the world.
On the occassion of World Water Day H. E. Mr. Bouasone Boupphavanh, Prime Minister of the Lao PDR, has highlighted the importance of the Mekong River system in providing "opportunity for the riparian countries to fruitfully expand their socio-economic cooperation and environmental management" as well as calling on the people of the Lao PDR to "use the Mekong River in a sustainable manner and cooperate in response to the possible impacts of its development."
