Vientiane - During his visit to Vientiane on the 10th and 11th of April 2009, Ban Ki-moon, Secretary- General of the United Nations, sampled and enjoyed indigenous Lao food, renowned for its numerous nutritional benefits.

Serge Verniau, FAO Representative in Lao PDR offered Mr Ban local delicacy meng menth (flying ants) at the dinner with the United Nations Country Team on Friday 10th April.

Mr Ban commented that the insects were “very tasty.” He also expressed his appreciation of FAO's efforts in promoting indigenous and wild food for its nutritional, cultural and environmental importance.
