VIENTIANE – Malnourished children and their caregivers as well as thousands of families in critical danger of becoming undernourished are receiving much-needed food rations, thanks to a €1 million (US$1,233,000) donation from the European Commission Humanitarian Aid department (ECHO) through the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). In total, ECHO has contributed €2 million (US$2,466,000) to WFP for the Ketsana relief effort.
“Ketsana struck some of the poorest areas of Lao PDR where people were already very vulnerable to undernutrition,” says Mr Howe, WFP Deputy Country Director in Lao PDR. “As a result we are still seeing very high rates of acute malnutrition in affected communities. The ECHO contribution helps WFP to protect more people from becoming malnourished, and enables those who already suffer from undernutrition to receive treatment."
