Youth take center stage at national forum on human trafficking

For the past three days 20 students from across Lao PDR have been in Vientiane attending a national forum on human trafficking. The students came from Bokeo, Saravane, Savannakhet and Vientiane Capital and were selected to attend from over 1,000 students who participated in countrywide forums.

The discussions gave the students the opportunity to share their experiences and voice their concerns, thoughts and recommendations on how to tackle the scourge of human trafficking. The forum will also act as a selection process for the 3rd Mekong Youth Forum to be held in Thailand this October. Five students will be chosen to represent Lao PDR at the regional forum with the possibility of a place at the January 2011 meeting for all members of the Coordinated Mekong Ministerial Initiative against Trafficking (COMMIT). Mekong Governments sign on Hanoi Declaration on the Mekong Region Water and Sanitation Initiative (MEK-WATSAN) in Hanoi

Representatives from the Governments of the Kingdom of Cambodia, Lao PDR and S.R. Vietnam, the donor community and partner organisations, met over three days, 20 to 22 April 2009, in Hanoi at the Regional Stakeholders’ Consultations of the Mekong Region Water and Sanitation Initiative (MEK-WATSAN), to obtain broad consensus of participating Governments on the objectives and implementation modalities of the UN-HABITAT supported MEK-WATSAN programme. This was reflected through the ‘Hanoi Declaration’ a statement jointly issued by the participating Governments. Over 70 participants participated in the regional consultations.
